I was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and in 1963 attended Robert Gordon's Institute of Technology, Scott Sutherland School of Architecture to begin a Six Year Sandwich Course in Architecture.
In my fourth year I took work experience at Aberdeen County Council, which was then located at 55 Queen's Road, having spent the previous two summers at the same office earning the princely sum of £8 / week.
I spent my last summer job in a private practice in Aberdeen before graduating in 1969. I joined what was to be my first and last employer on 30 June 1969. This firm grew rapidly in the next 15 years due to the coming of oil and in my 25 years with this practice I worked on a variety of projects gaining invaluable experience in the design and construction of many building types.
Below is a list of some of the companies with which I have had the pleasure of working over the years:-
- Abbeyfield Aberdeen Society
- Aberdeen City Council

Outwith normal working hours I can be found enjoying a game of golf at Balgownie Links, home of Royal Aberdeen Golf Club where I have been a member since 1977. I can also be contacted at Woodend Bowling Club (a leisure pursuit shared with my wife) and on several days of the year on one of Scotland's Munros.
As I value my thinking time between 9 and 5 and my leisure time between 5 and 9 I have, so far, resisted the temptation to own a mobile phone. I am fortunate that architecture is both my business and my hobby, taking up as much of my leisure time as my working day. If you need to know any more it's about time we met...
